San Miguel County Reconciliation Ceremony/Chipeta

Chipeta was an Indian Rights Advocate, Diplomat, and Peacekeeper. She used diplomacy to try to achieve peace with the white settlers in Colorado. She was highly respected by both the Ute and white people. In 1985, Chipeta was inducted into Colorado Women's Hall of Fame.

On October 8, 2016, Wayne Iverson of the Chipeta Mountain Project was able to gift my painting of Chipeta to a great grand nephew, McCook, at a reconciliation ceremony in San Miguel County. You can read more on my blog. I am so grateful and feel honored that the gift was received by an ancestor of this incredible woman and peaceful leader of the Utes.

Exhibition at Sellars Project Space through September 1st

Reconnection to Spirit is the title of an exhibition of recent work by Linda Armantrout. From July 22nd through September 1, Sellars Project Space is offering a solo show of Armantrout's spirit messengers. The artist reception is August 13, 2016 from 4pm to 8pm. Sellars Project Space is in the Twitchell Building, 101 North F Street in the heart of the Creative District in beautiful Salida, Colorado.

Armantrout’s work offers symbolically charged animals and people as  messengers of the power of Spirit. It is important to the artist to paint from a state of exploration and experimentation. Her intention is to allow room in each piece for the viewer to find personal meaning and connection.

Bison Poised to become the National Mammal

Of the EarthBison may be getting the recognition they deserve. After surviving decades of aggressive hunting that dwindled their numbers near the point of extinction, a Congressional bill seeks to establish the American bison as the national mammal of the United States. The bill, which was passed by the Senate in December and the House this week, is the result of a five-year campaign by conservation and Native American groups to get some recognition for the hulking plains-dwellers. Bison have survived much worse than the human threat: as a species more than 10,000 years old, they're a relic from the Ice Age that managed to survive what mammoths did not.
